Wow, misery....
Today I did 6 miles in 66 minutes. HAHAHAHA - is that an indication of how miserable it was? You bet it is! I expected to have trouble with this run, since it's been literally months since I've run this far (other than the marathon, which is a totally different scenario), but I didn't expect to have THIS much trouble! I can point to 3 factors:

1. Decreased carbs in the last few days, and probably liquids.
2. Unexplained stomach issues earlier in the day, and then just before my run.
3. The heat - 86 degrees, and this is the first time this year I've run in any real heat.

Combined, those issues make for a miserable, and crappy run! I REFUSED to give up, though - I reasoned, I possess a sort of steely determination when it comes to marathons, why not the training runs? I decided NOT to give up early in a training run this year, just NOT do it. I had planned for 6 miles, 6 miles is what I was going to do, if I had to crawl home. I kept up the running for the first two miles, and then started alternating walking/running. It was *really* hard to go right past the house at the 3 mile mark and not just walk right in. :(

In the end, I went 6 miles, lost 2 pounds of sweat, and felt a bit nauseous for an hour afterward. Interesting that this sort of heat would knock me on my butt, when I remember running in 90+ all summer long, with not a problem! In fact, the worst heat I ran in was 102 degrees last July 4th, but that was not so fun, either.

I feel like such a beginner.

Tough Love time - you are Such a beginner - again!Running is one of those things that doesn't forgive you for taking time away like a few other sports can.

I always think that your aerobic tolerance, your ability to breathe well whilst exercising goes really quickly even though you may have muscle tone and capability still there.

At least you can rationalise why you felt the run went badly and try to fix it next time. The heat issue just sounds like you're aclimatising again.

At the end of the day the main point is - you got out and did it. And that alone I think is the best thing in the world. Well done! So glad to hear you're back.

Tough love - ha! Thanks, I think! :D

You're soooooooooooo right, and I knew all the while I was skipping out on runs for so long that it WOULD catch up with me eventually! Hello, the day is here! But I do think it's important to analyze all the whys and how comes.

Bottom line - wow, I am so out of shape! But yep, I will keep plugging along....

I think you have cool friends on your FL as I really like both the answers below and personally I think you can/ should take lots from both of them.

But you're right, it is good to analyze and to improve because of it..which i have no doubt that you will!

I feel your pain! This is why I just never get better (i.e. faster). I always skip runs ... so sad, but true ;)

You are not out of shape, maybe just tired. Take your time, settle in your new home-business and things will sort themselves out. Soon you'll have much more time to run and I know you're the sort of person who will work hard! :)

LOL! Well let me tell you firsthand, don't skip TOO many runs, or it WILL catch up with you! LOL! Yes, sad but true, but for quite a while I didn't really have a choice, due to time constraints. And I'm sure the same is true with you - we have to find a way to work the running into our REAL lives, and usually that means we run less than we'd really like to.

But yes, I do plan to keep at it, no matter how much it sucks for a while. I was contemplating not running the half marathon this month, but really - it can only help me improve, so why not? I have a crappy half, another crappy full, and then I should be back in the swing of things!

It's all a matter of perspective; I would love to be able to run six miles in 66 minutes, even under the most favorable of conditions.

As you get back in shape, your time will improve.

Yes, I certainly hope so! It has been quite an eye opening experience, though.
